Walangkura Napanangka
Walangkura Napanangka was born sometime between 1938 and 1940 at a rockhole near Tjurkurla, west of Kintore in the Northern Territory. Whilst young, Walangkura moved through the country between Docker River and Walukirritji rockhole on the south west of Lake MacDonald. Walangkura was part of a group of Pintupi people who, after meeting a welfare patrol which included Nosepeg Tjupurrula, in 1956 walked hundreds of kilometres from west of Karrkurutinjinya (Lake Macdonald) to Haasts Bluff to access food and water.
Walangkura is the daughter of noted Papunya Tula artist Inyuwa Nampitjinpa (deceased) and the sister of Pirrmangka Napanangka (deceased), also an artist.
Walangkura first became involved in painting in her own right in 1994 when she took part in the Kintore/Haasts Bluff painting project. She subsequently started painting for Papunya Tula in 1997. Her subjects revolve around depictions of her country, in particular, representations of hills, sand hills, rock holes and creeks.
Walangkura has had a number of solo and group exhibitions and is shown in major public galleries such as the Art Gallery of NSW and National Gallery of Australia together with private collections such as the Kelton Foundation.
Today, Walangkura lives in Kintore with her husband and fellow artist, Johnny Yungut Tjupurrula.
