Mitjili Napurrula

artwork

Mitjili Napurrula was born around 1945. She is the daughter of renowned Pintupi artist Tjunkiya Napaltjarri and is married to Long Tom Tjapanangka. Mitjili is also the half sister to the great Turkey Tolson, one of the original Papunya Tula artists.

As well as her family connections, since taking up painting in 1993, Mitjili has become a resounding success in her own right. Her paintings revolve around representations of her father's country Uwalki west of Haasts Bluff. In particular, she often returns to Watiya Tjuta, a theme related to the making of wooden objects and closer connected to Turkey Tolson's signature, Spear Straightening. The imagery she uses in these paintings refers to the trees used for the wood. Mitjili sometimes also uses the hill imagery pioneered by Long Tom in her paintings.
